Valium - VeggieGirl - 07-01-2009

This was probably the worst medication that my 88 year old mother was ever prescribed. She was given this after her cancer diagnosis to help with anxiety issues, but it turned her into a virtual zombie. She would sit and stare, not communicate and go through strange motions and have weird conversations. This happened after about three or four weeks. I became real concerned about it when she just stopped communicating. Her doctor told us to wean her off the medication, which we did, and she was "back to normal" within about a week. This is a terrible medication from my perspective, and you have to be extremely careful when administering it, especially to the elderly.

Lidoderm - Veggie Girl - 07-01-2009

My 88 year old mother has been given some Lidoderm patches for when her arthritic knee flares up. It seems to help the pain on a temporary basis, but because the knee is a flexible joint, it is hard to keep in place. This was a trial run to see if it might augment the oral pain medication she is on. They are pretty pricey, but there are no side effects linked to the liver or kidneys, so that is good. We are going to continue using the patches for when the pain is especially severe and re-evaluate with the doctor during our next visit. It might be better suited to other parts of the body.

Synthroid - VeggieGirl - 07-01-2009

I was diagnosed with low thyroid activity and prescribed Thyroxine at the beginning, which brought my TSH numbers up to normal. It did help me lose some much needed weight, improved my sleep patterns and gave me more energy. I did not even realize I had hypothyroidism until I went for a routine check up. I guess my numbers really changed within the past year. I moved to a new city and had to find a new doctor, and during my last check up, she changed my medication. I am no longer on Thyroxine, but my new medication is working just as well. I had no problems taking this and no side effects. It is an easy med to take.

Paxil - Veggie Girl - 07-01-2009

When my father was diagnosed with a terminal illness, he was having trouble sleeping and was extrmely depressed. He refused an official anti-depressant, but his doctor talked him into taking a Paxil before he went to bed. That little pill was a lifesaver for my mom and me, as it allowed my dad to get to sleep and stay asleep. It also seemed to help him cope with his illness much better. There were no side effects, and once my dad realized that the pill was helping him get some much needed rest and feel better the next day, he took it without any arguments.

Differin - Lindsey Rick - 07-01-2009

I have mild acne, nothing terribly severe, but enough to make me uncomfortable at times with how my face looks. Differin has really helped clear up my acne and get rid of existing spots on my face. The trick is it takes time to work. Before your face will get better with Differin, it must get worse. You also have to be careful with overexposure to the sun, because it does make your face more sensitive to sunlight. Most of the time it doesn't really cause any problems, you just need to put on sunscreen more often than normal. I would recommend Differin to anyone with mild acne. It has really helped me gain confidence.

Celexa - VeggieGirl - 07-01-2009

My mother, whom I care for, was prescribed Celexa after the Prozac that she was on for five years stopped working. The Celexa seemed to work in the beginning. Her mood brightened again and she started showing interest in activities, but it didn't last. The dosage was adjusted twice, but it only made a small change, that didn't last. So Celexa was discontinued in favor of trying Lexapro. Celexa was a good bridge between the Prozac which had stopped working and the Lexapro, which she is on now. There were no side effects, but it just didn't seem to have the staying power for her. I think it is difficult to find safe and effective formulations for the elderly, but thankfully there were no adverse reactions, except maybe dry mouth, and that could have been attributed to other meds she as on.

Lipitor - Kaydee - 07-01-2009

Even though I have been trying to eat right, I could not get by cholesterol numbers down. My mother died of a heart attack at an early age and had problems with high cholesterol, so my doctor and I decided to give Lipitor a try. I just had my 6 month recheck and my bad cholesterol has dropped at least 30 points and my good cholesterol actually went up a bit.

My liver values are good and I have no noticeable side effects. I plan on continuing with this medication as long as my blood values stay good.

Lexapro - Veggie Girl - 07-01-2009

My 88 year old mother is currently on Lexapro as an anti-depressant. She had been on Prozac for five years, then was switched to Celexa, and finally ended up on Lexapro, which is doing a good job of leveling out her moods and keeping her depression in check. She feels good most of the time and is able to function normally. There is some concern that she may need a higher dose, but because of her age, they are keeping it as is for now. There are no side effects except for dry mouth, but that could be due to other medications that she is on.

Allegra - Lindsey Rick - 07-01-2009

I took this to help with seasonal and pet allergies. I am allergic to pet dander and pollen, and this product seemed to curb most of the symptoms. The only problems I found with this was that it didn't work as well with prolonged exposure to pet dander. It may have been that I needed a higher dosage, but I was recommended to try a different prescription instead. I did not experience any side effects. I would recommend this to those who have light to mild allergies.

Xyzal - Landon - 07-01-2009

Another expensive mistake! Allergies make you suffer in more ways than one; my doctor prescribed this in attempt to help tie down my running nose. My insurance did not cover this, so I had to pay for it for a week. Wasn't even worth it! This stuff works no better than Claritin or Zyrtec!

Cipro - VeggieGirl - 07-01-2009

My 88 year old mother is a bladder cancer survivor and has to have annual exams to ensure that there is no evidence of disease. Because the procedure is considered "invasive," she is given cipro after each cystoscopy. She has to take it for a week and thankfully, she has not had any problems, either from the cystoscopy or from the cipro. It's an easy pill, no side effects, and from all indication, it is very good at preventing infections.

Tessalon Perles - Landon - 07-01-2009

This is the best stuff on earth for a cough! My allergies make it rough on my throat and I cough a lot. In order to knock out the cough, I had been guzzling Robitussin DM with no avail. When you've got a cough; go to the doctor, get this stuff. It works awesome!

Nexium - Landon - 07-01-2009

Looking back, I wasted my money on this. Nexium works great and all, but my insurance copay was high, due to the cost of the medication. I talked to my doctor and was switched over to Prilosec 40mg. I would try Prilosec before resorting to Nexium.

Side effects - deflated wallet.

Prozac - Veggie Girl - 07-01-2009

My mother, whom I care for, was on Prozac for about five years before it started losing efficacy. She originally started out on Zoloft after she had been diagnosed with cancer and got extremely depressed, but the Zoloft didn't seem to help at all. The Prozac definitely perked her up and stabilized her mood for about five years ... then she started to get moody and down in the dumps again. I was impressed that Prozac really turned her life around at a time when she was hit with a cancer diagnosis, which was followed by other life-altering experiences. Thankfully, she is a cancer survivor, but the Prozac did need to be changed after five years of successful use.

Prilosec - Landon - 07-01-2009

I use to have horrible heartburn for reasons I still don't really know. This is perfect, it keeps the heartburn at bay and is way less expensive than Nexium. It might sound crazy, but taking two of the omeprazole you buy over the counter isn't near as good as the prescription 40mg. Its definitely worth a trip to the doctor.

Tylenol with Codeine #3 - Veggie Girl - 07-01-2009

My 88 year old mother has been prescribed Tylenol 3 for instances when her regular arthritis medicine is not working. She has severe arthritis in her knees, which often prevents her from getting around. The Tylenol 3 is something she takes at night to allow her a good night's sleep and helps her get up in the morning (it alleviates some of her stiffness). She uses it "as needed" and her only complaint is constipation. We try to keep ahead of that by drinking lots of fluid and ingesting fiber. The Tylenol does help.

Claritin-D 24 Hour - Landon - 07-01-2009

This is a great drug for drying up a stuffy nose. I have severe chronic allergies and can barely breathe during spring and fall. I take NoHist for daily congestion and itchy eyes, but I usually keep Claritin around for breakthroughs. Good, but makes you jittery.

Allegra-D 24 Hour - Landon - 07-01-2009

I've been searching for something to help with my allergies; its something I've fought with my whole life. Allegra-D wasn't that great. I could notice the decongestant properties of the psuedoephedrine, but the fexofenadine went unnoticed. I still had running nose and itching eyes. It also made me jittery, probably due to the psuedoephedrine. Overall, this wasn't very helpful.

Paxil - PaxilGuy3000 - 07-01-2009

Paxil CR works very well to treat anxiety/depression. In a small dose (12.5 mg a day) it is hardly noticeable at times. It works well to help you deal with being overwhelmed by stress. One unfortunate side effect for me however, is that my jaw seems to be clenched. This is becoming a problem, and may lead to me eventually cycling off or choosing a new medication.

Daypro - Veggie Girl - 07-01-2009

My 88 year old mother was switched over to Daypro after her doctor felt that Celebrex she had been taking might be affecting her heart. This was after the Celebrex scare a few years ago. She took the Daypro for about a year with only moderate success in terms of relief from her arthritis pain. I noticed that the Daypro was not as effective as Celebrex, and that is why she was only on it for about a year, before her doctor switched her medication again. I know she complained about the size of the pill. She had trouble swallowing it. It was an OK pain reliever, but there are better ones out there.

I use this Medication to treat Adult ADHD. The medication works well, Instantly after taking it a felt more calm, and collected. I was able to start and finish tasks without interupptions. The only complaints that I have about the Medication is that if you forget to eat before you take the medicine I have a difficult time eating. Overall I am very impressed with the product

Lexapro - Holly Bowers - 07-01-2009

I have suffered with severe depression since my younger teenage years. Upon moving to the US from England several years ago, I had to opportunity to begin seeing a psychologist, who suggested I ask my doctor for Lexapro.

I have now been taking Lexapro for two years, and could not be happier. I started out at 10mg, and after about a year my dosage was increased to 20mg.

Before starting this medication, the lethargy and lack of self-confidence I was experiencing meant I was unable to go out and look for a job, or start university, something I had always planned to do, but put off due to my personal problems. After just a few weeks on the medication, I had a good temporary job while I completed the process of applying for university. I'm now in my second year of school, and achieving excellent grades, something I did not manage in prior education. I am much improved in social situations such as parties and other gatherings, and have experienced no side effects. I have also unexpectedly experienced a life changing reduction in certain phobias I suffered with in the past. Most notably, I used to be very much afraid of dogs, and since taking Lexapro, I am now the proud owner of two adorable puppies.

Celebrex - SE Davis - 07-01-2009

My 88-year old mother, whom I care for, was given Celebrex to help with her arthritis pain. She had been on Vioxx and a number of other anti-arthritic formulas and they regrettably didn't seem to help. Although she claims the Celebrex didn't do anything to help her, I personally noticed that she did not have as much trouble moving after she started her prescription. She was able to maneuver steps much more easily than before taking Celebrex, so I consider that a positive sign. After about two years, her doctor decided to take her off. This was at the time when Celebrex was being questioned as to its safety. I think Celebrex was the best drug she had been on for her arthritis.
